Somebody Just Shoot This Guy (Totally Kidding)

Richard Daley.  Ring a bell?  The current mayor of Chicago.  He's about to put a very tough handgun control law into effect in the city of Chicago.  It is outlined here.  In the humble opinion of this blogger, gun control is moronic.  I get the premise, I really do.  People think, "Hey, lots of people are killed with handguns.  Let's make them harder to get and make all sorts of restrictions on ownership and use.  That will stop it."  Um, no.  No it won't.  The majority of people who kill people with handguns are the scum of life.  They don't care about laws.  They will find a way to get a gun.  They will carry it where and when they aren't supposed to.  All these laws do is prevent law-abiding citizens from defending themselves.

Here we go:

• Limits the number of handguns residents can register to one per month and prohibits residents from having more than one handgun in operating order at any given time.
I'm thinking that the gang banger with two handguns tucked into his sweatpants isn't going to suddenly get rid of one.

• Requires residents in homes with children to keep handguns in lock boxes or equipped with trigger locks and requires residents convicted of a gun offense to register with the police department, much as sex offenders are now required to do.
Absolutely keep them locked away from children.  Seriously.  This part I agree with.  How many children could be saved annually if their parents would lock up their guns.

• Prohibits people from owning a gun if they were convicted of a violent crime, domestic violence or two or more convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Sounds good to me.  Except the fact that people convicted of crimes aren't the smartest of people and they don't necessarily care about the law.  They'll find a way.  And why in the heck do we wait until they have TWO DUI's.  One isn't bad enough?  Really?

 • Requires prospective gun owners to be fingerprinted, take a four-hour class and one-hour training at a gun range.
However, the gun ranges they have to go to will be outside the city.  This whole deal prohibits new ranges within the city and relegates current ones pretty much strictly for law enforcement use.  C'mon, people, this is America.  We're too lazy to park in the back of a parking lot and walk to the store.  We're too lazy to leave our own city to learn how to shoot a gun.

• Those who have handguns, illegal under the ban, would have 90 days from the day the ordinance is enacted to register those weapons
Again, "Gangster McShooty Pants" isn't going to run right out and register his arsenal.

• The ordinance would include a ban on gun shops in the city and prohibit guns from anywhere except inside the owner's home. That would mean owners couldn't bring a gun into a garage, yard or porch.
Wait, what?  So if I own a handgun and some dude is about to rob me, murder me, kidnap my kids, or whatever, and he's on my porch, I can't step outside???  I suppose I could just open the door and shoot his butt from inside the doorway.

Do gun control measures keep guns out of the hands of a few people who would use them for terrible things? Maybe.  But the majority of those who are gun-less under these measures are your average citizens.  Defenseless.  Criminals will find a way to own and operate their guns.  They always have.  They always will.

So true. Criminals don't follow laws. I prefer to keep my right to bear arms, thank you very much.
